Old news seems to be the news of the week — 7 of 19 book stories featured books more than three months old (perhaps resurrecting hope for our backlist titles)?

NPR Books Watch — 1/23-1/29

Apparently some fellow named John Updike died this week, yes?  Reported on in five separate stories.  Neil Gaiman’s Newberry win garnered two stories (Morning Edition and Talk of the Nation last Tuesday) and Jimmy Carter nabbed three interviews with Morning Edition, Fresh Air and Diane Rehm last Tuesday / Wednesday.

Morning Brief — Monday, December 8

Uh-oh.  LA Observed says rumors are afloat that NPR West (from which Day to Day and News & Notes are produced) may be shuttered.  Which would be really bad news because both shows cover a whole lotta books.

***
I’ll be heading off to catch a 20-hour flight shortly.  Which may sound bad, but what’s worse is that EVA Air has left me only an hour and 20 minutes to catch my connecting flight.  (As any book publicist who has had to arrange a flight for an author overseas knows, airlines are only supposed to sell international connecting flights with at least two hours to spare.)  Sketchy.

There were 24 book stories collectively on the national NPR shows this week, which is encouraging, since the number is sometimes under 20, but only 15 of those stories were interviews with authors.  Other book-related stories ranged from Obama’s love of comics to travel to Forks, WA (where the vampires live for those of you who have been living under a rock for the past few years) to Quidditch competitions.  (I didn’t listen to the story so I’m not quite sure how they work around the flying bit …)
